REVIEW: Andy Richmond

I was fortunate enough to take a De Broize custom drum with me on a recent tour, and from the first show I couldn’t help being impressed. It had a clear tone, beautiful precision, yet was soft and versatile when it needed to be. Throughout the show I played varying styles, from using it to hold down a backbeat, brushwork, and mallet rolls and it shined exceptionally with each performance.

Another thing I liked about the drum was it’s story and its history. Most of the drums I’ve played previously were mass produced in factories, from wood whose sole purpose was to be made into drums, in a large quantity. So knowing the wood used for Sam’s bespoke drums had already experienced so much, from being a school cabinet back in the 60s, to being painstakingly handcrafted to perfection by Sam was pleasing to know.
